Description

Lana & Algodon's botanical hand dyed collection is a beautiful range of soft 8 ply equivalent merino yarn that has been hand dyed with plant-based dyes. The merino wool is from Australia, it is processed in Australia and it is small batch hand dyed in house!

The wool originates from a Responsible Wool Standard certified farm in Tasmania which has ceased the practice of mulesing. The wool is scoured in Victoria/South Australia before being carded and spun right here in the New England (NSW) region. We hand dye the yarn in small batches using low toxic mordants (potash alum + cream of tartar) and plant-based dyes. It is perfect for use in knitting, weaving and crochet projects.

Current colourways:

  • Grey blue: hand dyed with gardenia extract.
  • Butter yellow: hand dyed with osage orange extract.
  • Red: hand dyed with madder extract.
  • More colours coming soon!

Colour variations between batches is normal for small batch natural hand dyed yarns. We cannot assure that skeins from different batches will be identical in colour.

This merino yarn is non-superwash (hand washable only).

Knitting needles: 4 mm
Gauge (10 cm): 22 stitches x 29 rows

Sustainability Strengths & Weaknesses

All purchases impact the planet and its people. Instead of ignoring that, we help you weigh up the pros and cons.

✔ Wool is a renewable and biodegradable fibre.

✔ 100% Australian: Tasmanian wool scoured in Victoria/South Australia, and carded, spun and hand dyed in the New England region of NSW.

✔ Wool from a Responsible Wool Standard certified farm which has ceased mulesing.

✔ Natural (plant-based) dyes used.

✔ Low toxicity mordants used (potash alum + cream of tartar).

✔ The mordant solution and dye solution wastes are mostly used on acid-loving plants in our garden!

✘ Made from virgin materials and does not help reduce existing waste.

✘ While the wool is grown and processed in Australia, significant transportation is still required within the country.

✘ Wool processing requires significant water and energy.

✘ Wool farming inevitably has environmental impacts.

✘ While we only do small batches, hand dyeing is somewhat water and electricity intensive.
